Similarly if you only drive in the city and want a new look for your 4×4 with some on-road comfort, we’ve got road tyres suitable for larger 4×4 wheel sizes. Choose from great brands like; Toyo, Kumho, Federal, Maxxis, Bridgestone, Maxtrek, Monsta and Cooper.
Bring us any 4×4 you like and the chances are, we’ve got tyres for it. That includes; Ford Rangers, Nissan Navaras, Toyota Hiluxs, Holden Colorados and more besides.
Types of 4×4 tyre
If you thought 4×4 tyres were all the same, think again. There are quite a few to choose from but the can be broadly categorized into the following groups:
Highway terrain tyres – If you’re doing lots of kms on the highways, you’ll want a tyre with a high surface area in contact with the road. That way the ride will be smoother and quieter – especially at high speeds.
Highway terrain tyres don’t have very high load ratings so they’re unsuitable for trade vehicles carrying heavy loads. They do however, have higher speed ratings which makes them better for those long slogs down the motorways.
Most 4x4s come with highway terrain tyres as standard so if you’ve bought new, don’t be tempted to go straight into the bush. Read on to find out more about mud tyres and all terrain tyres.
All terrain tyres – These tyres take the middle ground. They provide relative comfort on the road but they can also be used in the rough. Not every all terrain tyre is created equal and they are normally given star ratings for attributes such as comfort and off road performance.
It’s also worth checking how many plies there are in the tyre and if there’s any steel in the carcass for extra puncture protection.
Some have different speed and load ratings too so make sure you’re making the right choice when you buy.
Mud terrain tyres – If you go off road a lot, mud terrain tyres are for you. These will get you through pretty much any terrain although some off road enthusiasts will tell you that all terrain tyres are better through the sand.
Mud terrain tyres often have extremely strong side walls and steel carcasses to help prevent punctures. The will also have chunky tread designed to push water and mud to the side of the tyre to keep the tread clear and the traction strong.
Mud tyres aren’t great on the road though so if it’s a long way on the highway to your nearest off road trail, you may want to consider taking different tyres to change onto your 4×4 when you get to your destination (although it’s a bit of a faff!).
If you need a bit of help choosing, just ask one of our expert members of staff to guide you through your options.
Cheap low profile tyres – Low profile tyres add a performance edge. But you don’t need to own and Aston Martin for low profile tyres to make a difference. Even if you own a humble hatchback or saloon, low profile tyres look great and help with handling through the corners.
Staggered wheels and tyres – If you drive a rear wheel drive car, you could get some added acceleration and stopping power by having a staggered wheel set up on your car. This is when the rear wheels are wider than the front wheels and have greater contact with the world which means more power can be put through the wheels off the line. You’ll often see this set up on cars like Porsches however, it can benefit any rear wheel drive car.
A range of sizes
We stock each and every tyre in a range of sizes. So no matter what diameter of width you’re after, we’ll show you options from each of the great brands mentioned above. Go big for your 4×4 or just go for whatever suits your vehicle. It’s up to you. Once again, if you’re unsure what you can fit on your vehicle, ask our staff and they’ll help you out.
